SECOND ANNUAL BRUNCH, BASKETS AND BEAUTY EVENT

Picture
The Woman's Club of Ocoee hosted their Second Annual Brunch, Basket &  Beauty Event to raise monies for the elementary school's media centers in Ocoee, as well as other club projects.  This was the second year for this event and it was a huge success!  President, Teresa Lemons welcomed all of the Guests, as well as Special Guest Mayor Scott Vandergrift and Commission and Mayor Pro Tem, Rosemary Wilsen.  The members celebrated "Women in History" at this year’s event.  President Lemons, shared a little history of how the Greater Federation of Women's Clubs, as well as the Woman's Club of Ocoee was instrumental in the years 1920 through 2000 with their dedication to community improvements by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service.

The 1920’s table was decorated by Cathy Sills, Sharon Zink and Teresa Lemons.  In 1925 GFWC initiated a nationwide federation survey of the American home. This survey placed a spotlight on the status of technology in the home.  The survey led to the inclusion of homemaker as an occupation on the 1930 US Census.

The 1930’s table was decorated by Pauline Mathius and Mary Black. The GFWC was  credited by the American Library Association with establishing 75 percent of  America’s public libraries.  Over 474 free public libraries and 4,655 traveling libraries were founded by the GFWC.

The 1940’s table was decorated by Mary Barber and Dottie Godek. The GFWC state federations “Buy a Bomber” campaign during World War II,
sold war bonds worth $154,459,132.  Enough money to purchase 431 planes.

The 1950’s table was decorated by Mary Jane Antonov, Gail Daniels and Pauline Mathius.  GFWC began its  relationship with the Cooperative for American Relief Everywhere (CARE).  The organizations jointly distributed relief shipments to Korea.

The 1960’s table was decorated by Barbara Milazzo and Joann Vann.  GFWC Woman’s Crusade for Seat Belts program resulted in the installation
of more than one million seat belts over the course of one year.

The 1970’s table was decorated by Sherry Dahlstedt and Lynne Seigler.  GFWC responded to the startling rise in crime with a citizen-based
grassroots program, “Hands Up”.  The program was applauded as a “valuable public service” by President  Gerald R. Ford.

The 1980’s table was decorated by Vicki Raduenz and Ana Miranda.  In keeping with GFWC’s commitment to conservation, the Federation
instituted programs to protect and preserve endangered  species.

     The 1990’s table was decorated by Pauline Mathius and Vicki Raduenz.  GFWC actively supported the passage of the Violence Against Women Act;
the Americans with Disabilities act; the Family and Medical Leave act; and legislation supporting handgun control.

The 2000’s table was decorated by Sonia Brown and Ann Hopper.  GFWC members contributed $180,000 for a fully equipped ambulance for use
by the New York Fire Department in response to the loss of equipment suffered during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

The GFWC Woman's Club of Ocoee's efforts help our community, as well as the federations efforts in addressing social issues affecting women and families through programs that combat violence against women and promote human rights.

Board Member and Immediate Past President, Vicki Raduenz offered the Devotion.  The attendees enjoyed a champagne fountain and a wonderful Brunch provided by ladies of the club Cathy Sills, Sherrall Applegate and Barbara Milazzo.  Marge Johnstone of Jessie Taylor Catering also donated a wonderful french toast bake with an apple sauce.  Pauline Mathius, Event Chair and Member, Sherry Dahlstedt hosted a dessert Auction. Desserts
donated by Marge  Johnstone of Jessie Taylor catering and club members went as high as $30 each!   There were vendors sharing their crafts and wares
from:   Biltmore Inspirations, Celebrating Home, Embroidery Bi-Lyn, Miche’ Bags, The Pampered Chef, Premier Designs Jewelry, Princess House, Scentsy Wickless, Tupperware and Vicki’s Crafts.
